Which Warhol: The Follow up to ‘Steal Banksy’
Work
We’ve recently embarked on the follow up to ‘Steal Banksy’. It’s a promotion involving the self-proclaimed ‘worlds greatest living art forger’ Tony Tetro. Briefly we’ve had Tony create 9 Andy Warhol replicas, each of which has been stamped 3 times on the back fake, fake, fake. The 9 are hung with one original Warhol. Guess which one is the original and you get the chance to win it. Guess one of the Tetro’s and you could win that too.
Here is a video of a Tony Tetro wannabe creating a Warhol
And here is the man himself showing how easy it is to fake a signature
The campaign has received a significant amount of PR coverage on TV, including on TEN The Circle here, Conde Nast here, The Australian here, and CNN here. Watch the interview on The Circle, it’s fascinating to see how someone relatively normal and talented can make the decision to do this (interestingly Steve Vizard is on the panel of The Circle – irony?) The campaign has also raised the ire of The Age, who claims the campaign is making forgery infamous, see it here. The whole idea of the campaign came from the tension of knowing forgery is bad and criminal, yet so prevalent and revered (by some).
Please stay at the Art Series Hotel and have a go. It’s open till August.
